The County Donegal village of Cloghan enjoys a rural setting surrounded by beautiful countryside, and is known for its excellent fishing and hunting. However, back in the late 18th century it was also known for its horse racing because it held a two day meeting from Monday 20th to Tuesday 21st September 1773. The four year old race over heats of two miles was staged on the first day and took 4 heats before the Hon. Mr Connelly’s Ceres was able to claim the Purse. The second day was reserved for 5 year olds, with a field of 3 contesting the 3 mile race. After an exciting tussle the Hon. Mr Connelly won with Miss Fortune beating Surprise and Toy. There are no further records of racing taking place in the village. |
